Özil's free-kick strike against Borussia Dortmund has
reopened the debate at Real Madrid.
Should Cristiano continue to take 90% of the side's direct
free-kicks? The Portuguese player's conversion rate from
free-kicks is on the decline, but he continues to work on
improving it.
Cristiano once again put in some extra time at the end of
training to improve this aspect of his game, although he
was not alone. Özil - who does not normally practice free-kicks - and Modric joined in.
Casillas was the goalkeeper.
Real Madrid has only scored one goal from a direct free-kick this season, struck by Özil
against Borussia. Cristiano has the monopoly over this set piece. Only Xabi Alonso has
dared argue for the ball with CR7, who went through a similar crisis last season.
Cristiano did not score a goal from a free-kick in the Liga until day 31. It came against
Osasuna, helped along by a deflection off the wall. Two days later, he beat Courtois from
a 35-metre free-kick.
