Jose Mourinho knew he was taking a gamble by dropping Iker Casillas for the game against
Malaga but he could not have expected it to backfire so spectacularly.

Casillas, who had not been left out of a Real Madrid team for an important fixture for 10 years,
sat on the bench in ridiculous red and black socks drawn up above his knees and watched as
the reserve goalkeeper Antonio Adan conceded three goals (two of them from the Manchester
City reject Roque Santa Cruz) in Malaga’s 3-2 win.

With regard to the omission of Casillas and Adán playing in the starting XI, he commented: “It’s
a technical decision, by the coach, who analyses the situation and the players he has for
selection and chooses the team.

A technical decision that you can use to invent the stories you want, but it is only a technical
decision. It’s my opinion but it is the opinion that matters.

It’s the coach that makes the decision and as I only have the valid opinions of my assistants,
that’s how we decided it. And I don’t think it’s a story given the way the game was played”.
