Lionel Messi broke Gerd Mueller’s record when he scored the second of his two goals against Real Betis on Sunday night in the La Liga.
That took his 2012 tally to 86 goals, breaking Mueller’s record of 85 in a calendar year.
Off the 86, 74 are for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina. Mueller netted 72 for Bayern Munich and 13 for West Germany in 1972 and was 27 at the time. Messi is still just 25-years-old and supremely fit.
Here’s a YouTube video of all the 86 goals that Messi scored in 2012.
